Teaching Assistantships

Teaching assistantships, as well as research assistantships, are common forms of financial assistance for students in the MA program in religion and modernity. Typically the department hires a number of teaching assistants for its two large first-year courses, RELS-131 World Religions/Religious Worlds, and RELS-161 Contemporary Problems in Religion and Culture. Teaching assistants may also be required for other courses, based upon enrolment, as decided by the head of the department.

Graduate students who are employed as Teaching Assistants undergo training and evaluation including an annual TA day. In accordance with university policy, foreign-born Teaching Assistants whose mother tongue is not English and whose education has been outside of Canada at a non-English language institution are generally required to take a language test and, if necessary, language training. Teaching assistants who are graduate students are paid at a standard university rate, currently $34.50 per hour. Graduate TAs in the department of religious studies generally work 10 hours a week, 13 weeks a term, 2 terms a year, a total of 260 hours, for a total compensation of $8,970.
